Have you ever made homemade mayo before? While we are on a special diet we are watching every ingredient in everything we are eating. So that means a whole lot of making our own kitchen staples like this homemade mayo.

Making your own isn’t as intimidating as it may seem. The best part is that we can control every single ingredient that goes into it and that makes me feel good.

What I really love is how we only make what we plan to use when we plan to use it. We don’t have a huge jar in the fridge for an undisclosed amount of time taking up space.

We can be more mindful of what we are using and making. Plus this tastes SO MUCH BETTER THAN THE STUFF IN THE STORE. I know you’ll love it as much as we do.

Is it safe to eat homemade mayonnaise?

It is not uncommon for people to get sick from eating raw egg products, due to the presence of salmonella bacteria. However, using pasteurized egg products will reduce your likelihood of getting sick.

How long is homemade mayonnaise safe to eat?

For many, the whole point of making something at home is to avoid all of the additives and preservatives in the foods one would typically buy at the store.

Unfortunately, this means that our homemade alternatives must be made fresh rather than stored for longer periods of time. In this case, homemade mayonnaise will only last for 3-4 days when stored in the refrigerator.

Though homemade mayonnaise will not keep as long as that bought from the store, fermenting your homemade mayonnaise will extend its lifespan, allowing it to last for up to two weeks.

Simply add 1 tbs of commercial starter culture or whey strained from yogurt with live cultures to the mix, then allow it to sit at room temperature for 8 hours. This allows for cultures of good microbes to grow in the mayonnaise and inhibit bad organisms from spoiling the food.

Why did my mayonnaise liquefy over time?

Mayonnaise is an emulsified and homogenous blend between egg yolks and oil. Store-bought mayo contains hydrogenated oils to preserve emulsification and keep the mixture thick. However, homemade mayonnaise does not use hydrogenated oils, making it healthier but also less likely to remain an emulsified and homogenous blend.

To fix de-emulsified mayonnaise, simply add 2 tsp of boiling water and mix together to re-emulsify the components.

How to Make Homemade Mayonnaise

In a blender, blend together the eggs, vinegar, and salt.
Simultaneously, slowly drizzle in the oil while blending. Once the oil is incorporated, blend for about 1 more minute.
Store in an airtight container for 3 weeks.

My mayonnaise is too thin. How do I thicken it up?

If your mayonnaise is too thin, it is likely due to adding too much of water-based ingredients to the mixture. To fix this, simply add oil in 1 tbs increments until the mixture achieves the desired consistency.

Why is my homemade mayonnaise yellow?

Store-bought mayonnaise is usually bleached to give it its white color. Homemade mayonnaise will be yellow due to the natural pigment in the egg yolk. Should you decide to ferment your mayonnaise, it will be a more pronounced yellow as well.

Does homemade mayonnaise taste different than the store-bought version?

It all depends on the type of oils and other emulsifiers you use. For instance, to get a more muted flavor, you will need to use a cleaner oil (like grapeseed oil) when making your mayonnaise. To further reduce the flavor of homemade mayonnaise, you will need to also choose a milder acid for your mix.

I recommend using lemon juice if you want to remove the vinegar from the recipe.

Can this recipe be doubled?

You can, and we do it often. Usually, when I know I will be making a lot of recipes that will be calling for mayo, I’ll whip up a double or triple batch of this great recipe.

How to tell if eggs are fresh

We have a habit of stocking up on eggs and then forgetting about them because they are out in the garage fridge.

While eggs will keep (if refrigerated properly) for up to 6 weeks beyond the date on the package – I always like to do this nifty little test if I know they have been in there for a while. The date isn’t always accurate.

When eggs go bad – they create an air bubble inside the shell. So if you place an egg in a few inches of water – watch what it does.

If it stays at the bottom – it is good.
If it sort of hovers halfway between the bottom and the top of the water – it’s on the way to going bad and should be used immediately.
NOW – if the egg floats – that means the air bubble has formed and the egg is no longer safe to eat and should be tossed out.

Which brand of mayo do I need to use?

You don’t need to use a specific brand of mayo. You can use what you already have in the fridge. If you prefer using miracle whip over traditional mayo, you can use it to make the Ranch Dressing.

However, you can expect the dressing to have a slightly sweeter taste than it would if you were to use regular mayo.

Do I use fresh lemon juice?

When preparing the Ranch Dip, it’s always good to use fresh lemon juice. You can use the juice of a single lemon because you don’t need too much of it. Adding lemon juice gives this dressing that perfectly tangy taste.

If you don’t have any lemons to use, refrigerated lemon juice is a great alternative that will go well with the other ingredients.

Can I use dried parsley instead of fresh parsley?

If you don’t have fresh parsley, feel free to use dried parsley. You can also use dried chives if you don’t have fresh chives. Whether you use dried herbs or fresh herbs, it will still add plenty of flavor to this homemade dressing. While I try to use fresh ingredients as often as possible – sometimes dried herbs are all I have at the time.

What should I do if I don’t have buttermilk?

If you don’t have buttermilk to make the Buttermilk Ranch Dressing, you have two options. You can replace it with traditional milk or make buttermilk at home. Buttermilk is one of the key ingredients, but fortunately, there are some workarounds if you don’t have it.

If you’d like to make buttermilk at home, it’s easy. You’d add a tablespoon of the lemon juice or vinegar or even apple cider vinegar to your cup of regular milk and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. You may then combine it with the other ingredients to create this flavorful ranch sauce.

Be sure to add the lemon juice or vinegar to the measuring cup first – then fill the remaining portion with the milk – that way you don’t have 1 cup + 1 tbsp, you’ll have just the 1 cup measurement and the ratio of milk to the acid is correct.

I always like to keep buttermilk powder on hand as a great buttermilk substitute. It lasts so much longer than buying fresh buttermilk in the refrigerated aisle and I can mix up as much as I need, whenever I need it. (see link for the powder below)

How many servings will it make?

Once you’ve prepared the Ranch Dressing, you’ll have two cups of it available to use. You can get many servings from two cups, but it all depends on how you plan to use it.

If you’re using it as a dip, you can get more servings. However, if you’re adding it with macaroni to create a pasta salad or pouring it over salad, you’ll get fewer servings because you’re using more of it.

How do I store the Ranch Dressing?

Pour the dressing into a plastic or glass container with a lid and put it in the fridge to keep it fresh. Don’t leave it out to reach room temperature because that’ll cause it to spoil.

You can keep it refrigerated for up to a week or for as long as the milk and sour cream are good for (so be sure to check those dates when mixing this up), but if you use it a lot, it’s probably not going to stay in the fridge that long anyway. It’s the best recipe – so when we make it, it is often gone in less than 24 hours.

It takes five minutes or less to prepare Ranch Dressing from scratch. Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, you can slowly combine them in a mixing bowl before transferring the dressing over to a container of your choice for storage.

I like to whip it up and get it in the fridge. Then I can make the rest of my meal while the dressing chills.

In a medium bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and sour cream.
Add the herbs with the lemon juice.

The history of barbecue in the Carolinas is quite complex, dating back nearly 500 years! However, the common thread that distinguishes Carolina sauces from the rest is that they are vinegar-based. In our case, we used apple cider vinegar as the base for our sauce, then flavored it with mustard and ketchup. This is typical of the Western North Carolina barbecue style.

Can I use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder?

Absolutely! Fresh garlic will add more flavor to your recipe than the dried and powdered variety. This recipe called for garlic powder over fresh garlic because people tend to have that on hand and it gives your sauce a smoother consistency. With fresh garlic, a little goes a long way and releases most of its flavor during the cooking process.

Can I freeze my extra Carolina Mustard Sauce?

Absolutely! Many people prefer to make large batches of barbecue sauce, then freeze what they are not going to use right away so they can have it on hand for grilling in the future.

When freezing your barbecue sauce, be sure to allow enough room at the top of the container for the water-based liquids to expand slightly during the freezing process. Despite its vinegar base, Carolina Mustard Sauce has a frozen shelf life of up to six months.

Why do I need to cook Carolina Mustard Sauce?

When you cook your barbecue sauce, it undergoes a process called reduction, where some or most of the water is allowed to evaporate from the mix and the ingredients are allowed to carmelize.

This is what gives you those thick and rich qualities you want in a good barbecue sauce. Reduction is what allows all of the flavors to marry, and ensures that it is the right consistency to stick to your meat and properly flavor it.

How to Make Carolina BBQ Sauce

Whisk together the mustard, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne pepper in a small saucepan until combined.
Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, for 8-10 minutes.
Remove from heat and cool. Transfer to an airtight container.
Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Why do I need to pack my brown sugar when measuring?

Packing your brown sugar is crucial for making consistent measurements. If you do not pack your brown sugar, you are leaving little air pockets in your measuring cup that will reduce the true amount of brown sugar you are adding to the recipe.

These pockets are never uniform, meaning that scooping without packing will add a different quantity each time. Thus, one should always pack their brown sugar when measuring – even if the recipe does not call for it.

Why do I have to wait 24 hours before the sauce has its best flavor?

As this liquid gold is allowed to sit and cool during refrigeration, the acids in the vinegar are allowed to break down the other ingredients like sugars in the ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire Sauce; the capsaicin in the cayenne; and the elements of the garlic. Once these ingredients are broken-down, their flavors will be much more prominent throughout the sauce.

Should I use light or dark brown sugar?

Since I make my own brown sugar, I use light brown sugar for almost all of my recipes. But light or dark brown will work in this recipe.

You see – when it comes to our store run to prepare for a big backyard bbq – it never fails that I forget to pick up something. So it is good to have a few homemade recipes on hand for those times when I need to make my own.

But this homemade bbq sauce is so delicious that I never want to buy the stuff in the bottle. This one is quick to make and oh so tasty. Perfect for pairing with all your favorite BBQ dishes.

How long can I store my Texas Barbecue Sauce in the refrigerator?

If you don’t allow your barbecue sauce to warm up to or near room temperature, you can store it in the fridge for up to two weeks before you should make another batch.

Can I freeze Texas Barbecue Sauce?

Absolutely! Many people prefer to make large batches of barbecue sauce, then freeze what they are not going to use right away so they can have it on hand for grilling in the future.

When freezing your barbecue sauce, be sure to allow enough room at the top of the container for the water-based liquids to expand slightly during the freezing process. Texas Barbecue Sauce has a frozen shelf life of up to six months.

Why do I have to wait 24 hours before the sauce has its best flavor?

As your Texas Barbecue Sauce is allowed to sit and cool during refrigeration, the acids in the vinegar are allowed to break down the other ingredients like sugars in the ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire Sauce; the capsaicin in the chili powder and cayenne; and the elements of the garlic and cumin. Once these ingredients are broken-down, their flavors will be much more prominent throughout the sauce.

Why do I need to cook barbecue sauce?

When you cook your barbecue sauce, it undergoes a process called reduction, where some or most of the water is allowed to evaporate from the mix and the ingredients are allowed to carmelize. This is what gives you those thick and rich qualities you want in a good barbecue sauce.

Reduction is what allows all of the flavors to marry, and ensures that it is the right consistency to stick to your meat and properly flavor it.

My favorite way to enjoy Texas Barbecue Sauce is always with my Smoked Pork Butt recipe after smoking it on the Traeger. However, this sauce also goes well with my Grilled Boneless Chicken Thighs or Barbecue Tri-Tip Roast! Overall, it is good for adding a rich, tangy flavor to your favorite cuts of meat.

What if I do not have red wine vinegar? What can I substitute with?

Red wine vinegar is important for adding that tangy flavor that is traditionally found in a Texan-style barbecue sauce. However, you may not always have this useful ingredient on hand. Substituting red wine vinegar with balsamic vinegar or rice vinegar would do just fine too.

Why do I need to pack my brown sugar when measuring?

What should I use this sauce on?

Should I use light or dark brown sugar?

Since I make my own brown sugar, I use light brown sugar for almost all of my recipes. But light or dark brown will work in this recipe.

How to Make Texas BBQ Sauce

Whisk together the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, red wine vinegar, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and cayenne in a small saucepan until combined.
Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Reduce the heat and simmer on low for 10-15 minutes or until thickened.
Remove from the heat and cool.
Transfer to airtight container.
Use immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

I don’t like spicy food. Can I remove some of the chili powder and cayenne?

You do not have to make this barbecue sauce spicy if you don’t want to. Many of the dry ingredients in this recipe can be substituted for other ingredients so you can change the flavor as you see fit. You can try adding some dried onions or a little rosemary to compliment the sauce’s naturally tangy flavor.

Who loves a juicy piece of chicken? I’m raising both hands here! When we lived in the desert, we grilled out almost every single night. While we all love my oven-baked fried chicken – it can be nice to not turn on the oven sometimes.

So that means we ate a fair share of marinated grilled chicken. It was absolutely delicious. Check out this recipe for the absolute best way to marinate chicken. You can also use this marinade to make my Oven-Baked Chicken recipe or my Grilled Boneless Chicken Thighs.

Marinating chicken is probably one of the easiest things you can do to make your chicken the best it can be. The best part is that you can use so many different flavors and spices – you could have an entirely different flavor of chicken each night of the week.

It really is as easy as whisk, toss and wait. I know, the waiting part is hard. But it makes the chicken so incredibly scrumptious. I can’t get enough.

Why marinate chicken?

Marinating chicken is a quick and easy way to infuse all the flavors that make it juicy and flavorful. It helps to lock in the juices and make that chicken the best thing you have ever eaten before.

How much marinade do I need per pound of chicken?

The general rule is about 1/2 of a cup of marinade for every 1-1.5 pounds of chicken. You can increase this recipe as needed depending on how much you are serving. Remember though – you can’t reuse marinade for sanitary reasons. So be sure to make only what you will need and discard it once you have removed the chicken.

What cuts of chicken can I marinate?

The short answer – all of it. We love to marinate chicken breasts, thighs, wings and legs. But you can even marinate a whole chicken if you are feeling ambitious. It’s so tasty.

Can you freeze marinated chicken?

Yes, you can freeze marinated chicken. Just place the prepared zip-top bag full of the chicken and the marinade in the freezer for up to 3 months. It will marinate while frozen – but at a much slower rate, so it won’t be overkill once you finally make it.

What is chicken marinade?

The chicken marinade is a combination of herbs, spices, oil, and other flavors used to season and flavor chicken. It is basically a sauce used to infuse the flavors into the chicken. Unlike a rub that just adds the flavors to the outside, a marinade gets the flavors throughout along with helping to keep the chicken moist and juicy.

How long should I marinate chicken?

While many believe that the longer the chicken sits in the marinade, the better it will be. By doing that it can actually end up making the chicken tougher once cooked.

For the best result, I recommend no longer than 12-24 hours. This recipe calls for at least 30 minutes, which is just enough to prep your other dinner ingredients and get the grill hot.

What are the best ways to cook marinated chicken?

The key to cooking chicken is to not try to cook it too fast, over too high of heat – which can dry it out. Also – with all of these methods – make sure the internal temp of the chicken reaches 165 degrees before serving.

BAKE – at 400 degrees for 22-25 minutes
GRILL – 5-6 minutes per side depending on the thickness of the pieces
STOVETOP – heat in a skillet over med/high heat, cooking for approx. 10 minutes on each side.
SLOW COOKER – cook on low for 6-8 hours with the marinade and juices – unless adding to another liquid in the recipe.

What should I marinate my chicken in?

Depending on the size of what you are marinating, you can use a casserole dish, a gallon zip-top bag, or even just a large bowl covered with foil or plastic wrap. My personal favorite is the zip-top bag because I can toss the mess when I’m done with it. Just be sure to also set the bag on a tray or in a bowl just in case the bag leaks a little.

Can this be cooked from frozen?

Unless you are cooking this chicken in a pressure cooker/Instant Pot – I don’t recommend cooking this from frozen. Please let the bag thaw first in the refrigerator for 1-2 days before cooking.

How to make chicken marinade

Add the lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, oregano, parsley, basil, garlic, brown sugar, paprika, salt, and pepper to a medium bowl and whisk until completely combined.
Place the chicken in a large resealable bag,
Pour the marinade over the chicken, seal the bag.
Place the bag in the refrigerator to chill for up to 4 hours.
Remove from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for about 20-30 minutes.
Remove the chicken and cook on the grill or in the oven.

Do I need to poke holes in the chicken before marinating it?

I see a lot of people doing this because they believe that it will help the marinade soak into the pieces of chicken. But just as I discourage people from using a fork to flip meat and chicken on the grill (because it breaks the seer and allows the juices to leak out – causing a dry result) I am also going to discourage you against poking holes before marinating. Doing so will dry the pieces out faster when they are cooking. All the juices you just infused by marinating will then leak out of all those holes while it cooks.

When it comes to foods, I could definitely live off of appetizers and snacks. I much prefer them over a large, multi-course meal.

So things like this veggie dip recipe make an appearance quite frequently around here. It’s great with so many things and is so simple to make. Did I mention that it’s crazy delicious too?

I love this because not only does it make it easy for me to grab a little or a lot- depending on how much time I have – but it also gives me incentive to eat those veggies.

I understand that it can negate the healthy benefits of veggies when you dip them in a delicious mix of mayo, sour cream, and spices. Really, I get it. But I do think that it is STILL healthier for me than sitting down with a bag of chips coated in artificial cheese. So I’m good with that.

What is the best way to store leftover veggie dip?

Just keep it refrigerated for up to 7 days. As long as you don’t let it sit out at room temperature for too long, this should keep well when chilled.

What is veggie dip made of?

There are so many variations to veggie dip. Some are made with all mayo or all sour cream. Some have Greek yogurt and some even have cream cheese. This one is a blend of mayo and sour cream.

Can veggie dip be frozen?

Unfortunately, no. Because of the dairy this dip does not freeze well. The texture becomes gritty as the fats in the dairy tend to separate when freezing and thawing. Please keep refrigerated and use within 7 days. Please do not let this dip sit out at room temperature for longer than 2 hours.

How to make it even better

Refrigerate this dip for at least a couple of hours before serving – but preferably overnight. The flavors seem to really come together and in my opinion- the dip is always better the next day. Just give it a stir again before serving.
Add bacon – that’s my favorite extra add-in. Bacon makes it better!
Fold in some sundried tomatoes for a burst of salty flavor.
Chop up some baby spinach and add it in there for some extra texture and color.

Can this be made with low-fat or non-fat ingredients?

This can be made with either low-fat or non-fat ingredients. Just know that the texture will be a little different and it may not keep for as long as when using full-fat ingredients.

HOW DO YOU MAKE VEGGIE DIP?

In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise and sour cream until smooth.
Gently crush the vegetable mix, add it to the bowl.
Add the guacamole mix and stir until well combined.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
Serve with cut vegetables, bread, or crackers.
Store the leftovers in the refrigerator.

Recipe Variations

Use Greek yogurt in place of the sour cream or the mayo. Just don’t sub it in for both. But as a sub to one of them is great.
Make with fresh or homemade seasonings to customize it even more.
Add in cheese – using cream cheese or fold in shredded cheddar cheese
Easily make a double batch
Add in some zest by mixing in chili powder, dried jalapenos or crushed red peppers.

I have heard of people swapping out the cream cheese with either sour cream or Greek yogurt. I have not personally tried it. But I would think it would yield a thinner consistency.

You can swap out for a lighter variety – but the texture will definitely be a little less creamy.

Can the types of cheese be substituted?

You can use any combination of cheeses in this recipe– mozzarella will make the best cheese pulls, but cheddar and Monterey jack provide the most flavor. Blue cheese is a great addition to the buffalo flavor.

Can this be made with frozen chicken?

Yes – but you will need to change the cooking time to 15 minutes for step 6. Also keep in mind that if the pieces are stuck together – the parts that are touching might not be cooked through.

You might need to then separate them and then cook an additional 2-3 minutes before moving onto the remaining steps of the recipe.

What is the best way to store leftover buffalo chicken dip?

Store any leftover dip in a shallow airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Why use a shallow container to store the leftovers?

Well, when the container is shallow, the contents chill faster than if you were to use a large, deep container. Ideally, you don’t want it to take too long for the leftovers to get to their chilled/stored temperature.

As I mentioned, if the food remains above about 35 degrees for more than 1 hour after cooking, the bacteria starts to grow.

HOW DO YOU MAKE Instant Pot Buffalo Chicken Dip?

Heat the Instant Pot using the Saute function.
Add the butter and stir until it has fully melted. Then, stir in the hot sauce.
Add the chicken breasts and stir to coat them with the hot sauce.
Sprinkle in the ranch seasoning.
Put the lid on and ensure the valve is in the sealing position.
Set to manual pressure for 12 minutes.
Once it has finished cooking, quick release. Be careful, the valve will steam and may splatter!
Remove the chicken and shred it into small pieces. Return the shredded chicken to the pot, along with the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, Monterey jack cheese, and blue cheese.
Heat using the Saute function. Stir until the cheeses have fully melted.
(Optional) If you would like a thick and extra creamy dip, add up to ¼ cup of flour and stir until the mixture has thickened– about 5 minutes.
(Optional) If you would like a thick layer of cheese on top, sprinkle over an additional 1 cup of cheddar or Monterey jack – close the lid again and set for manual pressure for 2 minutes. Quick-release once finished.
Garnish with parsley or green onions, if desired.
This dip can be kept warm using the Keep Warm setting for up to one hour.
Serve with crackers, tortilla chips, toasted baguette, or crudite.
Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.

What is “natural pressure release”?

Often, an Instant Pot recipe would call for you to release all the pressure at the end of the timed pressure cycle. However, the cooking process stops when the pressure is released.

For recipes that call for a natural pressure release, you would refrain from releasing the pressure from the unit for a set amount of time. This allows for a little extra cooking time as the pressure inside naturally goes down.

At the end of the natural pressure release cycle, you would then use the valve to release the remaining pressure and stop the cooking process.

Is it necessary to use a specific type of pressure cooker?

No, not at all. I just happen to have an Instant Pot, but pressure cookers have become so popular over the last couple years that just about every big & small appliance company makes one. This will work with them all.

If you don’t want to use Ranch Seasoning, you can substitute 1 tsp of garlic powder and 1 tsp of dried parsley flakes and the recipe will still be delicious!

If you are a regular here, then you know that we love appetizers here in our house. Maybe even more than sweets – which is saying a lot.

We will almost always choose appetizers over elaborate meals for nearly every holiday and they are the “go-to” for all our gatherings.

Because we like a nice spread of snacks, I like to keep it simple – choosing recipes that either the kids can whip together, or ones that take me just minutes to make.

So it is no surprise that this Crack Dip recipe is a favorite around here. Not only is it positively delicious with cheese, bacon and ranch flavors – but it literally comes together in just a few minutes.

Now- I know what you are thinking. Why call it “crack dip”? Well – it wasn’t something I came up with. It is an incredibly popular recipe – named for it’s addictive flavors, that has been loved my millions for many years now.

Often also referred to as Bacon Cheddar Ranch Dip – this dip is great when paired with so many different things you can dip into it. I guarantee you will find everyone gathered around the snack table and it will be gone in a flash.

What flavor variations can be made with this?

I love this recipe because of its versatility. Try mixing in diced green chilies, jalapenos, hot sauce, chicken, ground or smoked sausage, chili powder, onion powder, paprika, diced bell or sweet peppers and so much more.

Can I use bacon bits instead of freshly cooked bacon?

Yes, absolutely, that will work just fine. I prefer to use the real bacon pieces rather than the smaller dehydrated bacon bits so you get the true bacon flavor.

HOW DO YOU MAKE Crack Dip?

Mix together the softened cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise.
Add cheese, bacon crumbles, ranch seasoning, and garlic powder – mix to combine.
Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and top with sliced green onions before serving.

Can you freeze crack dip?

I don’t recommend freezing this dip. It can be made 1-2 days ahead of time and refrigerated until ready to use.

I like to use this dip within 1-2 days because it is sitting out for at least 30 minutes at a time when serving. This makes it difficult to know if it is maintaining the proper temperature needed for keeping it beyond 1-2 days.

What should I use to dip in the crack dip?

Crackers – I like to use Ritz, Triscuits, Wheat Thins, Pita Chips
Pretzels – You can use pretzel twists, sticks, crushed sourdough pretzels, or even soft pretzel bites.
Veggies – carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumbers – use it in place of regular ranch dip on your veggie platter.
Bread – we love to slice a baguette or cut a French loaf into bites and use those for dipping.

Is Crack Dip keto friendly?

You bet! That’s the best part – the cream cheese, sour cream, mayo – all of these ingredients are keto compliant, when you pair this dip with healthy options like celery sticks instead of baked snacks.

You bet! If you don’t have sour cream, you can sub in some plain Greek yogurt instead.

Easy Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Deliciously flavored with cinnamon & orange juice, this Easy Cranberry Sauce Recipe is ready in 20 minutes. Never serve it from a can again.

For as long as I can remember my holiday gatherings consisted of one family serving the jellied cranberry sauce, still shaped like the can and the other side of the family serving a beautiful bowl of homemade sauce.

Each year I would look forward to the opportunity to celebrate the holidays with the family that served the beautiful homemade recipe. So you can imagine how excited I was to finally get my hands on that family recipe – which I’m sharing here today.

I first learned to love cranberry sauce when my best childhood friend brought a leftover turkey sandwich to school for lunch. It had the perfect ratio of mayo, cranberry, and turkey.

I absolutely fell in love. At the time her mom made it with the canned cranberry sauce too- which is perfectly delicious on a sandwich.

But then many years later, living in NV, we found a sandwich shop in Vegas called Capriotti’s. Have you been there?

They have a sandwich called The Bobby – which is basically a Thanksgiving leftover sandwich that I absolutely fell in love with. (key ingredient for my obsession – homemade-style cranberry sauce)

Cranberry Sauce Ingredients

So here we have the ingredients. Now – the family recipe (which is pretty traditional) calls for orange juice. We have some citrus allergies in our family – so we often make it with pineapple juice instead.

Just add the cranberries, sugars, and spices to the pot and stir.

Once you stir it up the sugar will coat the cranberries.

Cover with the juice and water and stir to combine. This will help dissolve the sugars.

Bring the mixture to a slow boil and then simmer for about 10-15 minutes or until the cranberries are soft enough to be smashed or pureed.

Homemade Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Now- I like to get it to almost jelly consistency with a little bit of texture left in there. You can leave it chunkier if that is your preference or you can use an immersion blender to get it really smooth.

Add the orange juice and water to cover the cranberry mixture.
Cook over med heat and bring to a low boil, stirring occasionally.
Reduce heat to low and simmer the cranberries for another 10-15 minutes or until the cranberries are soft enough to mash and blend.
Remove from heat and gently mash the cranberries with a potato masher or you can use an immersion blender to reach the desired consistency.
Transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve cold with an orange peel spiral for garnish.

Can I use a sugar substitute?

I have not personally tried it, so I can’t say how that would turn out. But if you would like to try it, I suggest a product that offers a 1:1 swap. Please let me know how it turns out.

Can this be made without the orange juice?

Absolutely! As I mentioned above, we often make this with pineapple juice instead of orange juice. You can also just replace the juice with more water if you don’t want to use juice. However- because the juice adds sweetness – I recommend increasing the sugar so it isn’t too tart.

This isn’t sweet enough. Can I increase the sugar?

Yes – you can increase the sugar. A lot of people don’t like the cranberry sauce too sweet, while others like myself really love that super sweet flavor to counter the tart bite of the cranberries. I recommend increasing by another 1/4 cup and taste testing from there – increasing to your likeness as needed.

Reduce heat to low and simmer the cranberries for another 10-15 minutes or until the cranberries are soft enough to mash and blend.
Remove from heat and gently mash the cranberries with a potato masher or you can use an immersion blender to reach the desired consistency.
Transfer to a serving bowl or airtight container. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Serve cold with an orange peel spiral for garnish.

Notes

You can make this recipe ahead of time and store up to 2-3 days before serving.

So I decided to give you my way of doing it – after trying several different ways & coming up with what I found to be the easiest way for me.

I have teamed up with a select handful of some of my FAVORITE bloggers to bring you some awesome recipes today. So what’s the theme this month?

PUMPKIN of course!!! If you love pumpkin- then this will make you super happy because we have some amazing pumpkin recipes today.

I have had a little bit of an infatuation with making butters out of just about everything lately. So I just couldn’t help myself when it came to pumpkin.

It’s so easy making it in the slow cooker & OH! MY! GOSH! I’m so in heaven. I know that I love apple butter on everything- but this is DEFINITELY my new favorite spread.

I am thinking I might have to use all the pumpkins I have in the house right now & stockpile some of this to use throughout the year.

Crockpot Pumpkin Butter

You see – the thing about this season is that I just love buying pumpkins. Especially the heirloom ones, but generally we have a ton of pumpkins around here.

But the kids outgrew carving pumpkins so many years ago, which leaves me with needing to do something with all the pumpkins I pick up throughout the season.

Pumpkin butter is definitely the way to go and if I make enough, we can enjoy it all year long. I especially love whisking a little into things like oatmeal or a quick bread recipe.

Here are some commonly asked questions

Can this pumpkin butter be frozen?

You bet! That is my favorite thing to do – make a bunch and stockpile it in the freezer. Just be sure to use it within 6 months.

If you want some for the whole year, I suggest cutting and freezing the pieces of pumpkin that you would normally toss into the pot and then make another batch after the freezer stash runs out.

How many can this serve?

This recipe makes about 32 ounces if I remember correctly. It will depend on if you use a pumpkin closer to the 3 pounds or you go up to around 5 pounds – but 32 ounces is a rough estimate.

What should I do if it looks too thick?

It is perfectly okay to add a splash of water to thin out the butter if it is getting too thick during the cooking process.

What is the best way to store leftover pumpkin butter?

I keep mine refrigerated for up to 3 weeks and whatever I’m not currently using in the freezer. I have not tried canning this recipe yet.

HOW DO YOU MAKE Slow Cooker Pumpkin Butter?

Add pumpkin, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice and ginger to the slow cooker.
Cover & cook on high for about 3-4 hours – stirring each hour.
Once pumpkin pieces become softer (around 3 hours into the cooking) scoop out into a blender & blend to a smooth consistency. Or you can use an emulsion blender for this.
Transfer the mixture back to the slow cooker, stir & cook another 30-60 minutes.
Ladle into prepared jars. Store in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Can this recipe be doubled?

You bet. But I usually fill my crockpot with this, so you might want to have 2 going at the same time.

3-5 lb pumpkin cut, skinned & cubed

¾ cup brown sugar
3 tbsp cinnamon
2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice

Instructions

Add pumpkin, sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice and ginger to the slow cooker.
