Crowd favorite cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip with soft cottage cheese, creamy texture, spicy cheesy flavors, and ranch dressing. It is rich and comforting like no other dip.
If I am to make only one dip for a party, best believe I’m making this buffalo chicken dip with cottage cheese – it has so many interesting flavors and textures in it and is loaded with goodness. It is a dip to go overboard with.
And I loooove baked dips. They are just so much better and more savory than cold dips, don’t you agree?
Gina’s Recipe Rundown:
Texture: soft, gooey, silky smooth. Served warm with cheese bubbling on top and crunchy crumbles and onions. Yum!
Taste: savory, surprising, with lots of cheesy, spicy, and tangy notes.
Ease: Cooked dips are always easy, you simply mix the ingredients and bake them.
Why I love it: No fancy appliances are required.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick savory buffalo dip for a crowd.
- Healthy buffalo chicken dip compared to the traditional buffalo chicken dip that uses loads of butter. Here we use cottage cheese and it becomes a protein-packed gluten-free creamy dip.
- Almost a one-pan dish, with minimal clean-up.
- A great recipe to use any leftover cooked chicken you have after big family gatherings or holidays. If you don’t have leftover chicken, you can quickly boil some.
- Perfect for football game nights and cozy evenings and for meal prep too, as it lasts long in the fridge.

Ingredients Notes
You can find exact measurements and step-by-step directions in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Rotisserie chicken, OR boneless, skinless, cooked, and shredded chicken breasts. You can even use canned chicken.
- Cottage cheese. Protein powerhouse and healthy ingredient. Low-fat cottage cheese works but the best is to use a full-fat one. Note that low-fat products sometimes make the dips watery. If you don’t like the texture, you can blend it. And don’t worry about the taste, the dip won’t taste like cottage cheese only, the cottage cheese is mostly for texture, not flavor. I bet your guests will never guess it is even in there!
- Shredded cheddar cheese.
- Softened cream cheese. If you want a low-fat dip, you can leave out cream cheese.
- Buffalo sauce – the hot sauce responsible for the heat in the dip. Use your favorite brand. Franks Hot Sauce is a no-brainer. The end result is not that spicy in case you’re inviting guests with different preferences. Homemade buffalo sauce will be amazing too!
- Ranch dressing – a must in this dip recipe.
- Blue cheese crumbles (optional) or blue cheese dressing.
- Salt and pepper, to taste. I suggest being very careful with salt, as store-bought dressings can be quite salty already.

Serving Suggestions
Pair with your favorite chips, crackers, pita chips, pretzels, tortilla chips, or fresh vegetables (celery sticks, cucumbers, bell peppers, or carrot sticks).
If you’re a big fan like me, you can even use this cottage cheese recipe as a thick sauce for egg noodles or pasta, or in a sandwich.

Storage
Store leftover buffalo chicken dip with cottage cheese in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days or in the freezer for 2 months. However, the dip contains dairy so thawing it can make it grainy.
It is best served warm so reheat in the microwave or in the oven.
To make ahead, mix the ingredients and refrigerate for 1 day. Bake when ready.
Substitutions & Variations
- Dairy. You can use sour cream or Greek yogurt in the creamy dip too.
- Cheeses. You can also use extra cheese like Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, Pepper Jack cheese, mozzarella cheese, and mild or sharp cheddar cheese. Any cheese that is easy to melt and you like the taste, even regular or smoked Gouda. For garnish, you can swap blue cheese with feta.
- More flavors: add onion powder, paprika, garlic powder, different seasonings (taco seasoning works great), dried herbs. You can mix in some diced bell peppers too.

Expert Tips To Make The Best Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip
- You can make this dip in a slow cooker, an air fryer (8-10 minutes at 375 degrees F), an instant pot, or a microwave (1 minute).
- Do not use pre-shredded cheese as it often has anti-caking agents to keep the cheese shreds from sticking to each other too much. It will make the cheese melt into lumps. Shred your own cheese.
- If you want an extra smooth texture, you can blend cottage cheese in a food processor or blender.
- Adding a little bit of olive oil adds healthy fats and makes classic buffalo chicken dip even smoother and creamier.
- To get the top of the dip bubbly and crispy, broil it for the last 2-3 minutes in the oven.

FAQs for Cottage Cheese Buffalo Chicken Dip
Can you taste the cottage cheese in buffalo chicken dip?
Not really. Once blended and mixed with buffalo sauce and cheese, the cottage cheese becomes creamy and mild in flavor while adding extra protein.
Is cottage cheese buffalo chicken dip healthy?
Yes, it can be a lighter, high-protein alternative to traditional buffalo chicken dip since cottage cheese replaces some or all of the cream cheese or ranch.
What kind of cottage cheese works best?
Full-fat or 2% cottage cheese works best for the creamiest texture. Blending it first creates a smooth dip.
