For as long as I can remember our family has come together to enjoy great food while we watch the games on the weekends. But the thing that is key is keeping the recipes simple & easy.
When it comes to game day, I don’t want to spend my day in the kitchen. I want to spend it with my friends & family enjoying the food- not making it. Which is why I love these easy meatball sandwiches as much as I do.

Now when it comes to getting ready for game day, I make sure to stop by WinCo to pick up everything I need.
Not only can they beat every other store in town when it comes to prices – but they have the bulk food section that makes my heart go pitter-patter. Plus their vast selection makes it easy for me to get everything I need.
For these meatball sandwiches, I picked up these Carando Abruzzese Fresh Italian Meatballs along with Sicilian Fresh Italian Meatballs & Mozzarella Rustica Fresh Italian Meatballs too. There’s something for everyone!
You can easily find them in the refrigerated meat section of WinCo.
The best part about these meatball sandwiches is that not only are they meaty, but saucy & cheesy too! They are perfect for lunch or dinner, not just for serving at your next game-day party!
These Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs are made of raw meat & must be cooked per package instructions. Fortunately, I can bake them as directed & then add them to the sandwiches for the final prep, making this recipe practically effortless.
Here are some commonly asked questions
How can I keep these sandwiches warm for my game day party?
If you are making these in batches for a crowd, just prepare the sandwiches as directed. Then wrap each one in foil & keep them warm in a slow cooker set on warm so your guests can serve themselves.
What is the best way to store leftover meatball sandwiches?
After serving, place any leftover sandwiches in an airtight container. Or you can cover the baking pan with foil or plastic wrap. Be sure to label with the date before refrigerating.
To reheat, just place a sandwich or two on a microwave-safe plate & microwave for 45-90 seconds or until heated through.
How many can this serve?
I made 6 sandwiches using a couple packs of meatballs – with some meatballs left over. Since these meatballs are hearty, one sandwich is 100% satisfying, even for my bigger appetites around here.
Oven Baked Meatball Sandwiches
Can this recipe be doubled?
Absolutely. I was only able to fit 6 sandwich buns in my casserole dish. But if you use a larger 1/2 sheet pan it should give you plenty of space to make double this recipe or more- make sure to line it with foil before adding your ingredients.
Why choose Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs?
I love Carando Fresh Italian Meatballs because not only are they juicy & delicious but the high quality, robust flavors of Carando Meatballs allow me to create authentic Italian-style meals in less time than cooking from scratch.
HOW DO YOU MAKE Oven Baked Meatball Sandwiches?
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Line a large baking sheet with foil & then place the raw meatballs on it about 1″ apart.
- Bake the meatballs for 15 minutes.
- Remove the baking sheet, turn the meatballs over & return to the oven to bake an additional 14-17 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 185 degrees F.
- While the meatballs are baking, spray your casserole dish with oil or cooking spray.
- Place the buns in the prepared dish & line the inside of each bun with a slice of provolone cheese.
- Once the meatballs are cooked, place several in each bun in between the cheese. (*note- do not turn off your oven after baking the meatballs)
- Spoon the marinara sauce over the meatballs & then top each sandwich with a handful of mozzarella cheese.
- Bake in the 375-degree F oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
- *Opt – broil for 2-5 minutes to brown the cheese before serving.
- Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese & parsley prior to serving.
What kind of rolls work best?
I like to use a stadium roll vs a softer bun like you would use for a hot dog. This helps keep the bread from soaking in too much of the marinara sauce & from the sandwich from falling apart.
Do I need to heat the marinara sauce before adding it to the sandwich?
No, you don’t have to heat it first. I just spoon it on right out of the jar. The baking process takes care of heating it up to just the right temperature.
What toppings do you put on a meatball sandwich?
Personally, I usually prefer a classic meatball sub with just meatballs, sauce, and cheese. But I know many who like to add onions- grilled or raw, fried peppers, mushrooms, olives & so much more!

Can I freeze these once they’re made?
Gina Kleinworth says
I don’t think that would turn out well once thawed again. I don’t recommend it.

Is it okay to use frozen pre made meatballs? My store was out of the fresh ones and I was just curious if it would turn out the same with frozen ones or not. Thanks!
Gina Kleinworth says
I’m sure that would work fine. Just make sure to prepare them to the package directions (heating them in some way – assuming they are pre-cooked before using)
Susan Kimberly Henning says
Just make these, the family loves them! Super easy to make. I used the Italian pre-cooked frozen meatballs that our tiny grocery store carries, provolone on the bottom of hoagie rolls, 4 meatballs per and a shredded cheese mix on top.
I would strongly recommend that if you choose to use the broiler, to check every 30 seconds or so to ensure the bread doesn’t burn. 2-5 minutes is way to long for broilers on older ovens.
