Common Questions About Apple and Blueberry Crumble
What kind of apples should I use?
For the perfect combination of flavors, tart apples like granny smith apples work wonders. However, if you prefer a sweeter profile, gala apples or pink lady varieties will do the trick.
Fresh apples will always be best so I recommend hitting your local farmers market if it’s in season!
How thin should my apple slices be?
Aim for medium-thin slices. This ensures the apples cook to a soft and delicious texture while melding perfectly with the blueberries.
Don’t feel like you have to be exact, though. Sometimes you just have to go with your best guess.
Is it better to make this as single servings or one large crumble?
Both ways are wonderful! Using individual ramekins can be a charming presentation for dinner parties. But a single, large dish creates that cozy apple crumble feels perfect for family dinners.
Storage
This is one that I love to make way ahead of time. You can even prepare it and freeze it before baking. Make a few of these and freeze them and you’ll have an amazing crumble on demand whenever you need it!
Refrigerator
The crumble can be refrigerated for up to 2 days, whether pre-baked or after baking. If stored pre-baked, note that the apples might brown slightly.
Freezer
You can freeze the crumble, baked or unbaked, for up to 3 months. Just ensure it’s wrapped well in plastic wrap or stored in an airtight container.
Tips
Again, use fresh berries whenever possible. For me, that means whatever type of berries. Don’t feel like you have to stick with the blueberry option. There are lots of others that will do!
- Using aluminum foil or parchment paper under your dish can catch any drips, keeping your oven clean.
- If you’re a big fan of crumbles, consider making a double batch of the crumble topping. You can store the extra in an airtight container and use it for other fruit desserts.
- Enhance the flavor of your fruit mixture by adding a sprinkle of granulated sugar (white sugar) or a drizzle of pure maple syrup if you prefer a sweeter filling.
- For those craving a gluten-free treat, simply substitute the all-purpose flour with gluten-free flour.
